Abstract	A self-contained introduction is given to the theory of Gr\"{o}bner bases which provide algorithmic solutions to many problems in polynomial ideal theory. After explaining the basic theory of Gr\"{o}bner bases from a term rewriting point of view, we show that abandoning the usual distributive normal form representation of polynomials leads to a considerable simplification of the theory.
