Motivation
- Not every pair of elements has a quotient in Z:
- ~exists x: 2=x*3.
- x/y := such z: x = z*y.
- 2/3 is undefined.
- Introduce a set Q of rational numbers such that
- Z can be "embedded" into Q, and
- for all rationals a and b there is an rational x
with a = x*b (and consequently a/b is
defined).
